At this link the National Shooting Sports Foundation makes the case against legislation that would include mental illness as a reason for prohibiting firearms sales (notice the scare quotes.. ) NSSF Statement on Legislation to “Improve” NICS

A firearms trade association website diatribe about those so-called assault weapons. again they use the dreaded scare quotes, a sign of a fully automatic wingnut.org based in Newtown Connecticut.

Background Information on So-Called 'Assault Weapons'

There is a tremendous amount of misinformation surrounding the issue of so-called "assault weapons." Below are several of the more misleading allegations related to these firearms followed by corresponding statements of fact:

Fact: So-called "Assault weapons" are more often than not less powerful than other hunting rifles. The term "assault weapon" was conjured up by anti-gun legislators to scare voters into thinking these firearms are something out of a horror movie. These guns are used for many activities.

Conclusion:
Crime control legislation should be based upon solid facts, not emotions, cosmetics or appearance. Semi-automatic firearms are now the most popular type of firearm in America and are used for a wide variety of legitimate sporting purposes, including hunting, small game control, target shooting and personal defense.

I regard the use of quotes as legitimate in this case. The term "assault weapons" was in a very real sense created to make the rifles the term covers seem worse and make laws banning them easier to pass. This was very much a George Lakoff / Frank Luntz term before those gentlemens' time. It's not wingnutty to refuse to accept the term the other side seeks to impose on the conversation and to instead accuse them of trying to buffalo the public.

DF, True the term "Assault Weapon" may have slightly different definition or boundaries based on the piece of legislation dealing with them. The name grew to wide acceptance because generally people agreed with the term to integrate it into their vocabulary. How else would the gun lobby prefer for them to be referred to in legislation?

Somewhere between a Daisy air rifle and a fully automatic machine gun, there is a level at which a weapon's capability goes beyond what a civilian needs for self defense and impedes on the rest of the general population's right to be secure. Once these weapons are manufactured and distributed to the public, incidents like the rampage in Sandy Hook are inevitable.

The right to keep and bear children is at least as important as the right to keep and bear arms, right?

I guess regular shot guns and revolvers are insufficient for hunting, small game control, target shooting and personal defense? /
